Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary and the adjoining Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary located in Kanchanaburi, Tak and Uthai Thani provinces.
These two huge, adjacent wildlife sanctuaries, covering 6,220 sq km (2,400 sq miles) and surrounded by a further 6,000 sq km (2,320 sq miles) of protected forest, form one of the most important conservation areas in Southeast Asia. They are listed jointly as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 and are home to some of Thailand’s largest remaining wild elephant herds, as well as several endangered carnivores, such as tigers, clouded leopards, and Malaysian sun bears. The enormous gaur, a species of wild cattle, and the country’s last wild buffalo herds also live within the sanctuary. Rare species of gibbon can also be seen. At Huai Kha Khaeng there is a nature trail for visitors, but neither wildlife sanctuary is really geared up for large numbers of visitors – permission for large parties to enter the parks can be obtained from the Bangkok Forestry Department. We recommend you wake up early and see fog sea from the mountain.
